BIRTH OF THE SALTIRE

The beautiful, historic old parish kirk at Athelstaneford is believed to be the birthplace of the Scottish Saltire flag, which is thought to be the oldest national flag in Europe. Its white diagonal cross on a sky blue background was seen above the site of the church on the morning of the Scots' victory in battle over the English in 832AD.
